♡ ♡ ♡ ♡Offered is this adorable vintage pin of a pair of penguins, attributed to Martha Sleeper and made circa 1930s-40s.
This pin isn't signed which is to be expected...Martha Sleeper never signed her jewelry, so unless you're lucky enough to find one that still has its hangtag (like this piece...https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/martha-sleeper-vintage-jelly-belly-2053024305), it can usually only be identified based on a combination of distinct attributes including age, subject matter, construction methods, the type of materials used, or from old photographs or ads.
Her earlier pieces were all made by hand, using a variety of materials including wood, rope, feathers, leather, nut pods, bakelite, lucite, and other types of early plastic. This pin was made from some type of early plastic with hand-painted details, a feature typical for her earlier designs. It doesn't test as bakelite, although I have seen this pin produced in bakelite as well. Based on the heft and the way it was hand-carved and painted, it may have been made from Galalith or one of the American versions of Galalith, either Ameroid or Aladinnite.
It measures approximately 1 1/8" wide and 2 7/8" tall, measured from the tip of the brown penguin's beak down to the toes on the cream-colored penguin. It fastens with a heat-set pin mechanism and safety clasp and is in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear and no flaws to note.
I recently purchased several Martha Sleeper pieces from an antique dealer who retired, and she kindly included the little plastic pendant pieces as a free gift. They very well could be Martha Sleeper pieces too from her popular "School Days" line, although without any other components, I don't have any way of verifying this. They come in a little clear perspex case and will be included with the penguin pin.
