LUGGAGE LABELS from the legendary old CATHAY HOTEL, Shanghai, China and Bai Yun Hotel, GuangzhouFour vintage luggage labels - one from the legendary Cathay Hotel - Shanghai, China and three from the Bai Yun Hotel, Guangzhou, China.
The Cathay label is 4 1/4 inches in diameter, unused. The landmark Cathay Hotel (later known as the Peace Hotel and now the Fairmont Peace Hotel) has an almost 90-year history in Shanghai. The hotel opened as the Cathay in 1929. with its fabulous location overlooking the Bund, its distinctive copper roof and its interior Lalique glass adornments, it was immediately the "place to be" in Shanghai. In fact, Noel Coward wrote part of "Private Lives" while staying there. It was - and still is - known for its Jazz Bar which features 70-plus-year-old musicians. During World War II it was occupied by Japanese troops. In 1956 it became a hotel again as the Peace Hotel and a number of years ago was refurbished and rebranded as the Fairmont Peace Hotel.
